Exotic Air Cup Suspension

Coming in 2012, there is a new player in the cup suspension market: EXOTIC AIR. Insider news are circulating that their designs have been in BETA testing secretly for the pass few years. Fully CAD designed and billet cut in T6061 alloy, their products are rigorously over-engineered. With 2 different sizes to hit the market, this will be a company to look into. The rumors are over 3-4" inches of suspension lift (depending on coilover stroke), lightweight designed that does not add much to unsprung weight, and packaging unlike anything else in the automotive market. They look like the Opus One of air cup suspension.. more news to come in 2012 !!!

Every build has a theme. This example of a 40's Ford Pickup has a 2-tone effect where the body-line easily allows the truck to be split in the middle. I appreciate the gloss black grill which connects with the hood and into the roof. If only the wheels were black and had better offset.. almost there.

Nonetheless, a fine example of modern on classic.

Spotted at this years Goodguys Nationals in Columbus, this Chevy Astro was putting on a show at the drag strip with a full top fuel motor. With a induction taller than the roof-line, this chopped and complete tube-chassis drag-van is all show and go.

This Nissan powered 1932 highboy sure stuck-out in a field of 4000 rods at the Nashville Nationals. Look at how tight the fitment is especially knowing the highboy fenders tapers inward. You are looking at a Japanese designed V6 Nissan power plant inside a domestic Ford hot rod.

Falcon Sprint Sleeper

Ford Falcons were designed with excellent lines from the factory. Small and compact with a lighter curb weight gave the advantage over the rather heavy Muscle cars of that era. Donnie's '64 Falcon is a total sleeper from the outside. Equipped with only a set of wheels and a lower stance, it's hard to guess what lies under the front hood. A 347 ci Ford 4R70W with twin Cobra Paxton superchargers melts the BF Goodrich tires at many street light launches.

The Goodguys Colorado Nationals were abundant of fine examples of Hot Rods, Customs, and Muscle Cars. One particular example was this incredibly built '67 VW owned by Josh. Many VW are built with a rebellion attitude, but not this wide-body and chopped roof beauty. The amount of detail and high-level execution sent Josh's bug straight into the winner-circle with a Rodders Rep Pick of the weekend.

This is clearly one of my top 5 VW bugs of all time.

Matt Lazich's Anvil is built by Steve Strope and it features some incredible detailed parts. Besides the Kaase-built Boss 429 motor, carbon fiber bumpers, hood, air dam and lip wing, fully rolled-caged with red leather stitching, this Mustang had a custom cantilever suspension with the ubber expensive JRi Racing coilovers. With one-off wheels made to resemble old Gurney-Eagle Indy car wheels, the single locking spindle, and the big brake kit really puts this build in a different league.

Hot Rods, they are an American icon in History. Hundreds of thousands of Hot Rods exist today, some in their original show room condition while others have been completely restored and customized to incredible fleet of automotive art.

Over the years, I got to see thousands of Hot Rods from all around the country. over time, a red '32 high -boy does become ordinary but, there is nothing wrong with that. For those builders that push the creative boundaries in this industry, I am able to filter thousands of photos to fine those extraordinary leaders in the game. This screen shot shows quite a bit of different styles in the Hot Rod world, all executed flawlessly in it's own fashion. It's funny when I look into the Honda or the Silvia scene, owners believe that all the possible combos have been attempted leaving them with harder canvases paint. Can you imagine what a Hot Rodder is faced with when building a '32..?

Back to my point. There are plenty of crazy builds and themes out there, but a small percentage actually hit a cord and become something spectacular. I'll leave you with this: It's not about the length of your spec-sheet, but how each modification jives with one another to bring that vision/concept to life.

VIP Style Civics built in Thailand

Thailand and VIP inspired builds have been the talk for awhile now. These guys are creating a new trend without even knowing it. With the US Honda market still focused on engine swaps and wire tucks, although great in many ways. But these Thailand project Honda Civics are just hella original. Execution is incredible with custom VIP being the these. Ultra low slammed stance with deep dish wheels in negative offset is the choice for these FWD chassis.

Looking closely, you will notice the VIP style that has started this new generation of builders. Popular Japan VIP brands have somehow been carried over onto the Honda platforms. If you know the VIP scene, Japan doesn't offer much VIP parts for the Honda market (minus the K-car and Vans). To achieve such a fleet, these kits were completed cut and re-fiber glassed to fit the economy cars perfectly. The originality and talent is pouring out of these fine examples of what is total original and in an rather ordinary scene.

Kudos to Thailand for their artistic eye and creativity.

An employee at GG just upgraded into a E63 AMG from his WRX at a total steal-of-a-deal. With barely a week owning the rights to the pink slip, a set of TSW Nurburing wheels in bronze replaced the stock rather boring AMG shoes. A quick trip to Sonic MS proved useful where Darwin and the crew performed the ultimate digital controlled lowering module from M1. With over 3" inches of height adjustment, this slick sedan sits ultra low with tucking 18" TSW wheels.

Next up is a carbon fiber front lip and a matching rear lip wing. Look out for this 6.3 Liter beast roaming the streets of San Mateo and at local Euro events.

Thailand VIP Honda Accord

If you lived in a country that offered nothing for the VIP enthusiast, what cars would you build then?.. In this case, a rather different fwd platform was chosen by the creative folks at Royal Garage in Thailand for the transformation. What are you seeing here is late model Honda Accord that has been converted from daily grocery grabber to VIP angry attitude.

Look closely, this Accord is rocking a JDM genuine Blow Design Mode Parfume aero kit molded ever so perfectly onto the original Honda bumpers and skirts. The wheels are by WORK Japan and I can only guess it is on series suspension arms for the extreme demon camber out back. Even the exhaust tips and decals are legit no knock-off BS here.

So, if a true VIP platform is not offered in your country, don't panic or give up your dreams on driving a VIP style car... follow what the folks at Thailand are doing. Take a car that is affordable and available and make it a VIP inspired car. You don't have to build catalog cars.. be creative and make your own VIP car. Who knows, maybe along the way you will re-invent the wheel like the incredible example you see below.

VIP cars are commonly known for their low and slow mentality. Traditions go back to Mercedes influences with their AMG themed cars. That's all gravy, but I still enjoy a good rumble. Perhaps it is the "hot rod" blood in me calling for straight pipes or a blower. Nonetheless, I have found a company that actually makes headers for the Toyota UZ series motor. PPE Engineering

For those that are stumbling upon the site for the first time, my project car is my daily car. Adding mods can be difficult at times, b/c my Celsior30 is my way to and from work. Adding an intake and exhaust was simple; it did not require the car to be out of commission. Headers on the other hand, is an entirely different ballgame.

PPE Engineering is a sponsor on Clublexus.com offering headers to members for many makes and models. Paul was the contact over at PPE and he was truly a professional to deal with. I had made a request to have the headers made and shipped within 1.5 weeks and Paul delivered right-on-time. The plan is to get the headers installed and dyno tested before headed out to WORD-UP on Saturday. (Install post to follow..)

Back to the actual product. I am quite impressed with the quality and design from PPE. The welds look strong and the CNC header plate is thick and flat. What kind of power can I expect?.. According to PPE, on a completely stock LS430 just with the headers installed they were able to extract a peak of 24whp on the dyno. Torque also jumped up significantly.

Seems like today, everyone can buy an entry level SLR camera and call themselves a "Photographer".. but in reality, a small percentage actually have any knowledge about their equipment. Then within that small percentage, only 1/5 of those select few actually understand lighting. Personally, I'm a total point-and-shoot person, but I have been lucky enough to be surrounded by talented photographers, Jeff, Ken, Tony, to show me their skills. You guys capture what the eye cannot see.

Which leads me to this fine photograph by none other than Jeff @ PhotoshootMyCar.com. During our Lexus LFA Experience at Infineon Raceway, we found an empty pits garage where Lexus only occupied 3 bays with storing the 0-60 GS450h race car, Five AD built GS350 demo car and extra wheels and brakes for the LFA cars. It was in the later afternoon when we decided to pull the LS into the garage and start the photoshoot. Grassroots.. no flash, no tricks, just capture the car in its' environment.

Jeff and his assistant Arlin did an incredible job. This is just a teaser to what's to come. Look for a full feature on DriveCulture.com very soon.

Lexus Marketing invited a very select few to enjoy a day at Infineon Raceway to experience the Lexus LFA supercar with non other than their all time winning Gran-AM driver, Scott Pruett as our instructor and co-pilot of the day.

Here you see Scott sliding the incredibly "Smart" LFA around turn 11 by the red Toyota wall. What you don't see is the difficulty and technical ability of Scott to actually dance this incredible car. Why?.. the LFA has the most precise computers calculating all aspects of the vehicle at every mili-second. As soon as the car begins to slide, the ECU will actually allow a bit of a drift before transitioning every so smoothly back to a grip mode. Unlike standard traction that retards timing and instantly robs horsepower, the LFA glides so sweetly saving the driver from any misshapes. Incredible.

The Lexus LFA Experience Part 1

Saturday afternoon, I get a phone call from a very close friend from Socal. He asks if I am free to come meet him at the Fairmont Hotel in SF. For those that are not aware, I live 1 hr plus east from SF and not to mention 2 kids and a family. Nonetheless, I managed to pull strings with the wife and off I go to the city. What awaited there caught me by total surprise.

Crossing the Bay Bridge on a Saturday evening into the city, the traffic was surprising good.

A yellow Lexus LFA sat in the front of the hotel while a crowd stood and took pictures. My good friend is Ryan, who is our connection to Lexus Corporate. Ryan flew up to SF with one of the Marketing gurus at Lexus Corporate, Jim. Along with the group, I met Tom from Seattle co-founder of Open Interface North America Inc., Moto the president from Club4AG, Guy and Lang from VIP Auto Salon, Jeff from Drive Culture and a few of Jim's friends.

After the first class meal at the Fairmont Hotel, we decided to cruise the streets of SF and headed towards Embarcadero. The Lexus LFA made an impression on everyone that happened to be walking around that night. People pointed and took pictures, as the perfectly tuned exhaust note screams to a incredible 9,400 rpm redline.

The night was perfect with clear skies. The yellow LFA lead the 2 white LS430s and a white Prius throughout the city. Ryan was pleasantly revving the 4.8 liter V10 motor for all of SF to enjoy.

While shooting on Embarcadero street, a super nice security guard allowed us to drive the LFA onto the sidewalk for better photos. The guy later suggested an even more private location. He let us into a gated parking lot that stretched even closer to the Bay Bridge and onto the water.

While driving into this locked parking lot, a modded Mazda Protege tried to follow us in, but was quickly asked to turn around by our good friend, the night watchmen. Those kids gave thumbs-up and I'm sure they updated their Facebook right away.

I'm never a fan of yellow color, but to be perfectly honest, the LFA looks tough in yellow. Perhaps it was the gunmetal wheels or the 15" inch carbon ceramic brakes, but I was smiles from ear to ear.

This years Tokyo Auto Salon had one very popular and loud color.. PINK. That's right.. not the washed out pastel pink.. more closer to a magenta hue. All with a matching pink accented interior trims. Personally, I think it's great that VIP owners continue to push the limits and try ideas out of the box. Right or wrong is not important to Japan, rather exploring new grounds is what drives their scene.

This Celsior30 rocks a subtle aero kit with black roof and trim. Looks like the new trend is no more chrome trim or polish.

Stanced '32 Hi-Boy – Moal Coachbuilders

Here at Goodguys, I'm lucky enough to see many '32 Fords built a million different ways. From traditional, to nostalgic, and then complete 1-off projects. Below is my favorite '32 ever. It's built by none-other than Michael Moal of MOAL Coachbuilders here in Oakland. If you are not familiar with the MOAL name, Google it. These guys build high profile cars for celebrities and are also the choice for all Ferrari restorations.

So, what makes this '32 incredible?.. The stance. This hi-boy is completely functional with the latest of today's modern equipment. Motor was built by the Walsh family (known for building Bonneville salt flat speedsters). You can see this 1-off at local Goodguys events throughout the year.

Toyko Auto Salon is full of 1-off builds. This year there was 3 Lexus LS460's all supercharged with a Rotrex unit. This particular LS460 was the most modified out of the 3 complete with Project Mu BBK, Skipper hydraulic suspension, INGS/ Wald aero kit combo and super sexy & expensive BBS LM-R in 21" inches. Notice the custom white marble interior trim.

Power figures are 480ps @ 6,400RPM, 500N/m at 4,100RPM – C38 Rotrex supercharger, Suruga Speed exhaust, and high-flow catalytic converter. RAD!

JOB Design Aristo - StanceNation

A friend brought this to my attention over the weekend.. a super fresh JOB Design Aristo16 on Stance:Nation.

"Looks so good, it hurts." I must agree. This Aristo with the bright red leather interior and red dipped wood trim against the dark gunmetal exterior is heavenly. Full JOB Design Hybrid aero kit on the outside including the lip wing on a trunk lid with shaved inner taillights and the famous IS-F style quad style exhaust tips.

What makes this car even better is the stance and choice of wheels. Not 20s or 19s.. 18" inchers with a steplip. Meaning the face is actually a 17" diameter. How do you tuck 18" inchers front and back?!? This Aristo is literally less than an inch off the ground and thanks to air suspension the clean aero kit can be saved from street curbs and pot holes.

Tokyo Auto Salon 2011 is this weekend and the JOB Design staff have been busy getting everything ready for the big Neoteny Lambo debut. JOB Design has a booth this year where their latest creations will grace the stage with the best of Japanese automotive styling. The FUGA and the GS will debut along side the Gallardo. The cars will travel by ferry for 2 days to Tokyo while JO and the staff will fly into airport. Booth prep will be tomorrow with TAS being Friday-Sunday.

Neoteny debut at TAS 2011 by JOB Design

JO of JOB Design will debut his NEOTENY brand an exclusive exotic car lineup at the 2011 Tokyo Auto Salon. The first car to be designed and produced is JO's own Lamborghini Gallardo. The aero kit consist of complete bumper replacements and side skirts and lip wing. The design is very bold and functional. Jo's Gallardo sports WORK Equipp wheels all finished in a stylized baby-blue and orange theme. The complete kit is hand-laid fiberglass by JO himself so you can expect fit and finish to be nothing shy of perfection.

Look for the NEOTENY Gallardo if you make it to TAS 2011 happening January 14-16. JOB Design is also looking for ASIA distribution, so come by our booth and one of our representatives will be glad to assist with more information.

Junction Produce has been busy getting a Rolls Royce ready for the annual Tokyo Auto Salon. This is their first attempt at modifying an exclusive high-end England platform. The above images show the conceptual drawing of a simple lip kit and the progress this week. Already a larger sedan compared to the norm, Junction Produce had to create the Scara wheels in a incredible 24" inch diameter and wrapped in Falken rubber.

This car will no doubt be a huge hit at TAS.

What caught my eye was the radical circular brush effect on the face of the wheel, apparently they call it "Balken Brushed". It adds a 3D texture to a flat surface which is interesting. Offered in 20" inch applications and 10" wide or 22" inch diameters and 12" inches wide. Be prepared to pay a hefty price tag.

The Lexus scene in the US is still in its' early stages. Most owners choose modifications with the intent of reversing back to stock when that 3 year lease is due. When that is the case, you usually end up with a flood of copy-cats on the forums with the same spec sheet of parts.

It is unfortunate, since I come from the Honda and VW culture where creativity is the only way to be different. From wire-tucked motor bays to bold colors, that particular scene has endless results. But in the Lexus world, to be bold and daring with new ideas are often times flamed and hated upon on forums, etc. Therefore Lexus owners usually plays safe.

Which bring me to this post. Everything about this Lexus IS350 is unlike the norm. The baby blue on flat black trim is the opposite spectrum of the OEM luxury and chrome. Add a WALD lip kit and a set of 18" inch CCW 3-piece wheels shot in black and you have something very different.

What many builders do not consider is the lower stance when using a smaller wheel. Sure, a set of 20s would have looked huge on this platform, but doing so would have raised the overall height of the car as-well. A smaller wheel with a nice meat-stretch was the perfect combo to take this car to the next level.

Lexus owners, think outside the box. Stop reading the same tuner magazines and start researching elsewhere. There's an entire world of possibilities and ideas yet to be attempted on a Lexus platform. From '30s hot rods to today's modern machines, your Lexus is just an empty canvas, ready for your next move.

The idea of car shows started long ago in garages all across the world. Getting together at a buddy's garage to share ideas or helping out install his latest modification is the grassroots scene. Slowly it has grown to what we know as car shows of today. With major collab with sponsors and vendors to high dollar builds meant specifically to win a certain award, etc.

Goodguys have catered to the all American automotive enthusiast for over 20 yrs. The events have stretched across the nation with 24 shows a season. A very small corporate crew travels like a moving circus to accommodate the thousands of people at a given weekend when Goodguys are in town.

Car shows, over the years, have become static and stale mainly due to the countless hours sitting and waiting for the Sunday roll-out. Sure, there are plenty of topics to repeat and beat to death with the club members but once that gets old, monthly events sure loses its' edge.

Goodguys pride themselves on being devoted to the enthusiasts and the passionate car junky at heart. So several years ago, they quietly launched the Goodguys Street Challenge Autocross with Airride Technologies as one of the main supporting sponsor. An autocross track was designed and laid out for our own show car attendees to entertain themselves during the long hours of a event weekend. Little did we anticipate the positive outcome from our members.

Today, after 3 successful season the Goodguys Autocross has grown tremendously. 15 events of the 2011 season will have the Autocross Challenge. Builders building Autocross-spec cars just for the purpose have jolted the internet forums. Added sponsors continue to show participation thanks to the positive reaction from members and show goers.

So come to a Goodguys event, walk around and check out the chrome. Eat a corn dog and try a funnel cake. Walk the largest swap meet imaginable and score some coupon certificates from the huge vendor section. Pick-up a Goodguys tee and hoodie. When you think it's getting slow, turn to the Goodguys Autocross to see some dynamic cars take on the course. Three different classes, free to enter, prizes for class winners, and just good old American fun.

SEMA–MVP: '61 Mercedes 190SL

One of the most talked-about cars at SEMA 2010 was this ultra custom '61 Mercedes in the D-BASF booth. Built by "Hot Rods and Custom Stuff" for a very special client, this is not your regular old school '60s left-over. This infact is a custom built 1-off '61 190SL that has been cleverly altered to fit a 2004 SL600 chassis. A total of 6" inches were widened in the rear and an extreme 9" inches in the front. Everything you see is hand formed metal-work. The grill started life as a hunk of billet aluminum then CNC into a 1-piece work-of-art. Even the vents on top of the hood was CNC in billet for that ultimate perfection. Under the hood is a full Renntech powered twin-turbo V12 motor pushing over 600 horsepower. The wheels are truly unique. Not because the 20" inch billet-wheels were designed after the original hubcaps, but the center Benzo logo actually has weights on the bottom that allows the logo to stay upright at all times. The interior is screaming old and new with the oem navigation and shifter nicely built into the center console while the classic steering and dash reminds you of the good-old-days. Plush and perfect red leather wraps the rest of the interior for that ultimate sport and luxury appeal. The trunk even displayed matching luggage's also finished in the same fine red leather.

By far this Mercedes 190SL was one of the most unique builds of SEMA 2010. Looks for this at next years Goodguys Del Mar events.

Speed by Spectre brought out their recent record breaking Bonneville 400 MPH race car.. little words can describe this stealth piece of machine.

HONDA booth pushed their just launched CRZ Hybrid sport 2 seater-beater. There were 8-9 killer examples of mild street to fully blown track prepped CRZ's on display. The HONDA rep was not that nice asking me not to take photos.. well, that inspired me to take more..

Standard (STD) coilovers were being launched into the US market this year. I had a chat with their "manager" during setup.. little did he know, I had a set of STD coilovers that and after 1 minute of chatting, I realized he knew nothing about his own product.
